One of the best career paths in the home buying and financing profession is becoming a home appraiser. Whether good times or bad, homes are on the market and need to be appraised. The first step to becoming a home appraiser is to get the best education that you can find. Check out the available schools in your area and don't forget to check schools that are available online. The most important thing to check for is that the school is accredited. Unfortunately there are schools out there that aren't accredited and may not be accepted by your state to fulfill the educational requirements. The national appraisal license education requirements include 150 hours, including a 15-hour USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice) course. Just check to make sure all the courses you take will count.

Becoming a home appraiser will also mean that you must have 2,000 hours of actual appraisal experience under the direction of a fully licensed appraiser. It is never too early to start checking around to see if the appraisers in your area are taking on newly graduated appraisal students. If possible you should have an agreement in place so that you can begin those 2,000 hours as soon as possible. It will be a rewarding two years of experience for you. You will know by the time you have them completed that you absolutely are ready to go out on your own. That experience will also prepare you for the day some other appraisal student approaches you to be their trainer.
